About Flexible Learning
Part-time courses are offered in a variety of scheduling formats, including at night or on weekends, flexible daytime delivery, or you can opt for distance or online learning. If you meet the prerequisites and there’s space available, you can register for a course immediately. Courses are offered in each of three terms: Fall (September), Winter (January), and Spring/Summer (April).
Application processing
This program is open to applications beginning:
- February 1st* for the January intake
- May 1st* for the April intake
- October 1st* for the September intake
Entrance requirements
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first-qualified basis.
- English language proficiency: Category 2 – English Studies 12 (67%) or equivalent
- Math: one of the following:
- Pre-Calculus 11 (67%) or
- Foundations of Math 11 (67%) or
- Workplace Math 11 (67%) or
- Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses
International applicants
This program is available to international applicants who currently have a valid status in Canada.
Study permit: A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program.

Bring your own device
Most courses and programs in the School of Business + Media are BYOD (Bring Your Own Device). Please ensure you bring a laptop to every class. Plug-in outlets will be provided at most stations in classrooms, but not in all classrooms, so please ensure you have at least 2 hours of battery life available at the beginning of each class. Check the following recommended computer requirements prior to the start of class. If a program or course does not require you to provide your own device, that information will be provided by your instructor or indicated in the course outline.
For online classes, it is important you have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content.

Combining small class size with working industry professionals as instructors, these courses give you personal attention and the most current, relevant skills you need in payroll. You’ll build an essential foundation of skills for a range of payroll administration positions by studying topics like accounting, payroll, human resources, and more.
Note: Part-time programs and courses are open enrolment and although we make every effort to accommodate demand, course registration cannot be guaranteed in every semester. Courses in high demand fill quickly and may result in students unable to register for a course that semester. Courses may also be cancelled due to low enrolment.

At the end of the program, successful graduates will be able to:
- Perform accounting and payroll functions according to payroll compliance laws and current accounting regulations.
- Apply generally accepted accounting principles and determine how they influence financial reporting.
- Interpret relevant Canadian employment regulations applicable to human resources and their impact on organizations.
- Enrol new staff into the company payroll system.
- Apply payroll compliance responsibilities and regulations for organizations.
- Ascertain who is liable to pay Canadian income tax and be able to determine residency for individuals.
- Use multiple different computerized payroll programs effectively.
- Use technology to analyze accounting and payroll data and communicate the results to stakeholders.
This program is designed to give you a flexible, accommodating way to train for a successful career in payroll. Courses in the program are offered at multiple times every term with options for classroom and online study to best suit your needs.
With courses that give you a comprehensive overview of accounting, payroll, and human resources, you’ll quickly develop the usable skills, knowledge, and confidence that you need to find, secure, and excel in many entry-level payroll administration positions.

By earning your certificate, you’ll be gaining the practical, related skills you need for day-to-day responsibilities in many entry-level payroll administration positions. Whether you use your training in your current position to better manage your small business, advance your current career, or begin a new one, this program will give you the necessary skills for success.
Apply for graduation
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.
Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.
All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
