Course details
A practical course for those responsible for safety and health in an organizational setting, including managers, supervisors, shop stewards, safety committee members, members of the labour relations or human resources department. Topics include: Workers' Compensation Act; rules and regulations, safety program elements; the role of the committee; claim and disability management; due diligence; and union/management cooperation. This course may be eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant. Students register themselves into the course, then apply for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant to cover payment, if eligible.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Name the occupational health and safety and workers' compensation agencies having jurisdiction federally and provincially in Canada and describe their role in the workplace.
- Discuss the format and general contents of federal and provincial occupational health and safety regulations and given on-line and printed resources, demonstrate a general ability to access and interpret these regulations.
- List and describe the elements of an effective occupational health and safety program.
- Describe the safety program review (safety audit) process and demonstrate an ability to effectively participate in the safety program review process on behalf of an employer.
- Describe the legislated duties of an occupational health and safety committee and demonstrate and ability to effectively participate in the duties of such a committee.
- Identify the steps in an effective accident investigation and demonstrate an ability to effectively participate in an accident investigation.
- Recognise the systems used by federal and provincial agencies to determine the cost of accidents and the methods used by such agencies to charge the costs of workers' compensation claims resulting from such accidents to employers.
- Describe premium rate setting and premium reduction incentive systems used by workers' compensation boards.
- Demonstrate an ability to access and use the on-line and printed occupational health and safety and workers' compensation information important to a human resources professional.
- Prepare the various forms required by workers' compensation boards in response to a workplace accident and claim for compensation.
- Describe the claim adjudication process and stakeholders.
- Describe the workers' compensation appeals process and demonstrate the ability to effectively participate in the process on behalf of an employer.
- Outline the elements of an effective disability management and return-to-work program and demonstrate an ability to participate as an effective member for the team managing the return-to-work process.
