Technical Standards

BCIT Technical Standards are provided not as specifications, but rather as a conversation with you, our valued consultants, to guide you in your architectural, design, and engineering solutions of our projects with the goals of:

  • Tying seamlessly into BCIT systems – the hard standards;
  • Outlining BCIT requirements that BCIT wants to go above and beyond currently adopted Codes, Standards, and ByLaws; and
  • Outlining specific requirements at BCIT that are outside of Codes, Standards, and ByLaws, for example, for operational and/or maintenance requirements.

BCIT Technical Standards is organized using the MasterFormat® systems but does not adhere strictly to the format.

Campus Planning and Facilities (CPF) will consider requests for substitutions and other deviations from the standards contained, unless specifically noted as otherwise. Please speak with your CPF Project Manager or other CPF representative for assistance with this process.

During the design process, consultants are expected to work with the BCIT Technical Standards:

  • Download and read through the pertaining document(s)
  • Follow the BCIT Technical Standards as provided or create an alternative design approach
  • Provide and communicate an exception report broken down by sections on any alternative designs, substitutions, and/or technical advancement, or obsolescence.

BCIT has facilities located in five (5) jurisdictions throughout the Lower Mainland, so it is up to the consultant team to ensure all architectural, design, and engineering solutions conform to the applicable Authority Having Jurisdiction:

Burnaby Campus, Burnaby BC, Centre for Applied Research and Innovation (CARI), Burnaby BC, Downtown Campus (DTC), Vancouver BC, Aerospace Campus (ATC), Richmond BC, Marine Campus (BMC), North Vancouver (City) BC, Annacis Island Campus (AIC), Delta BC
