Construction

The new facility that will provide affordable and sustainable housing for 470 BCIT students. The project will feature 470 beds in studio and single, common spaces and support areas, student housing offices and an outdoor accessible courtyard. The building is configured as two rectangular wings set at 90 degrees.

Construction Schedule

• Start Date – October 2022
• Estimated End Date – Early 2025

Project Impacts

• White Avenue will be closed from SW03 to SW09 for the duration of the project (Emergency access for Fire trucks will be possible 24/7)
• Parking Lots: P4 will be closed during the project. P9 will no longer be in service as it will become part of the footprint of the project.
• Buildings SW02, SW03, SW05, SW09 may be impacted by construction noise and altered access
• Pedestrian access will be maintained to all buildings. A network of temporary paths have been constructed and can be viewed on the attached access plan.
• Lot K will be temporarily closed during the course of construction as it will be used as a layover area for trucks and deliveries. The payment kiosk at the lot will remain open.

We will provide regular updates of any other changes required through construction.

Project Footprint and Access Routes

In preparation for the excavation phase of the BCIT Tall Timber Student Housing Project, Parking Lot K will be closed. The site will be used by the General Contractor for layover area for tracks.

• Coinciding with the Lot K closure, two short sections of walking path currently used to access the lot will also be closed, (one path located north of Lot K and one path located east of Lot K).
• An alternative route will be signed.
• During the closure, the Parking Kiosk and Emergency Call Station will remain active and accessible to patrons.

Plan of the Closures

Over the next month construction for the Student Housing project, will be taking place in the areas of the site close to SW3, SW5, SW9, SE12.

Work Schedule

Six Week look ahead (April 21, 2024 to June 1, 2024):
Week 1 – Mechanical & Electrical Services, CLT Install, Interior Finishes
Week 2 – Mechanical & Electrical Services, Envelope Install, Steel Columns Install, Interior Finishes, Concrete Placement
Week 3 –Mechanical & Electrical Services, CLT Install, Interior Finishes
Week 4 – Mechanical & Electrical Services, Envelope Install, Steel Columns Install, Interior Finishes, Concrete Placement
Week 5 –Mechanical & Electrical Services, CLT Install, Interior Finishes
Week 6 – Mechanical & Electrical Services, Envelope Install, Steel Columns Install, Interior Finishes, Concrete Placement

Work includes the operation of heavy equipment, sawing,  and hammering.

Truck Access to Site: Please note that large trucks will need to access the site during the construction. There is a designated route around campus that uses Wayburne Drive, Carey Avenue, Kyle Street and White Avenue. Pedestrians walking in these areas should be attentive for large vehicles at all times.

There is a network of accessible pathway around the site. Please see attached plan.

As part of construction for the Student Housing Project large trucks will be required to access the site. Trucks will enter the campus from Wayburne Drive and travel along Kyle Street before driving past the current student housing building to the site. (See attached plan). They will exit the campus onto Willingdon Avenue at the Goard Way intersection.

Flaggers and additional traffic management will be place in heavy traffic areas. Pedestrians walking in these areas should be attentive for large vehicles at all times.

DTC Washroom – construction closures.

The renovation to create a gender neutral changeroom and washroom facility, is now complete.

The washrooms and showers on the mezzanine level as well as the fitness centre at the Downtown Campus are now open.
