The School of Computing and Academic Studies (SoCAS) research committee encourages research within SoCAS and supports the research goals of BCIT.
Our mission
To facilitate the advancement of the School of Computing and Academic Studies’ (SoCAS) applied research agenda as it relates to and supports the educational and industry objectives of BCIT’s Institutional Applied Research Mandate.
Objectives
The committee’s objectives can be summarized as follows:
- Advise management on research-related matters
- Identify strategic themes and directions for research activities within SoCAS and, where relevant, within the institution at large and with other organizations
- Identify the required needs and resources for research activities within SoCAS
- Facilitate a broader involvement of faculty, staff, and students in research activities
Key strategies
The committee will pursue the following strategies:
- Develop and maintain an inventory of applied research activities
- Promote research activities among faculty, staff, and students
- Assist with the development of research centres/clusters
- Identify possible (internal/external) funding sources and disseminate the information among faculty
- Encourage faculty to take initiative in developing proposals for funded research projects
- Encourage faculty involvement in multi-disciplinary research projects and activities
- Contribute to the development of BCIT applied research theme(s)
- Review research proposals (in the preliminary and final stages) to ensure conformance with BCIT standards and SoCAS strategic research directions (as a part of the quality assurance process)
- Assist with the development of informational/promotional materials related to research activities
- Review and advise management on professional development needs for faculty and staff as related to applied research activities
- Advise on policy issues related to the modalities for faculty involvement in applied research activities
Complementary strategies
- Review and develop the ethics policy as it relates to research activities (in collaboration with the BCIT Research Ethics Board)
- Develop task groups in collaboration with other schools and organizations at BCIT related to research policy topics of common interest
- Collaborate with the faculty from the Technology Centre and other schools at BCIT on research projects and activities
