The School of Computing and Academic Studies (SoCAS) has active researchers, who benefit from the cross-fertilization of ideas across the many disciplines within the school and with other schools at BCIT.

As SoCAS is engaged in teaching the foundation courses for most of BCIT’s technology programs, there is a great deal of inter-disciplinary and collaborative investigation and work being done in many fields – computer science, biomedical engineering, mining, robotics, health sciences, civil and structural engineering, to name a few.

Some of the research is also being done in conjunction with other educational institutions, corporations and research organizations.  Students have the opportunity to be involved in research projects, exploring unique areas and intersections in science, technology, and teaching, and contributing to their advance.

Breakthrough development

A collaboration between BCIT and UBC has created the world’s first atom-based pressure standard. This standard, which relies on the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle, is a true quantum-based sensor. The applications of this BCIT patented technology include improving satellite performance and semiconductor processing — both multi-billion dollar industries. This breakthrough has placed BCIT/UBC at the forefront of pressure and flux metrology.

BCIT researchers receive CFI funding to continue research with the Canadian Hyper-K International collaboration. “This funding is great news for BCIT. Our students and researchers will now be able to use their applied research skills and training to contribute to developing technology, as a partner in international, world-class science collaborations,” says Dr. Barry Pointon.
