The BCIT Archives exists to support the institutional, teaching, research, and learning needs of faculty, staff and students at all levels. To do this, we acquire three major categories of materials:

  1. The official public records of the Institute, including those created by the Board of Governors, committees, faculties, departments, and administrative offices.
  2. Materials documenting the wider Institutional community, including the donated papers of private groups such as the Faculty Association, Student Association, Support Staff, Alumni Association and personal papers donated by prominent individual faculty, staff, alumni, and students.
  3. Historical research collections donated that relate to a variety of subjects, including aviation, sustainability, and education in British Columbia.

Reproductions

The BCIT Archives will scan photographic materials in its collections under the conditions presented in our Agreement on Use for Photographic Reproduction. BCIT Archives will provide digital copies of prints, negatives, and slides from its holdings. When requesting copies of photographs please quote the Reference code. Reproductions of BCIT Archives materials are subject to the use fees when approved for commercial use in publishing, broadcasting, video production, self copy, exhibits, product presentations, interior design, advertising, or similar commercial use, including for-profit work done by consultants or commercial design firms on behalf of government agencies or non-profit institutions. Fees are for one-time and non-exclusive use and are in addition to any reproduction costs. Information will be provided as to ownership of copyright if known. Responsibility for securing copyright clearance rests with the user.

Research

Access to primary source material on a variety of topics directly and indirectly related to BCIT campuses, education in British Columbia, and history. Please contact the Archivist for an appointment. Please note that the physical location of the BCIT Archives is currently closed until further notice. Reference services are available to assist faculty, staff, and students in using the BCIT Archives digital collections, as well as general research assistance.

Search the BCIT Archives holdings.

Please contact the Archivist for information about finding aids or materials that are not yet available for searching online. The BCIT Archives works to continually improve access to the online holdings.

Digitization

In accordance with our collection development policy, we are interested in building our collections in the following broad areas: BCIT, materials which directly support the curriculum, Faculty and Student research output, the material record of the Institute, and those materials which are considered to be rare or unique. If you have a project that you think fits these parameters, please contact the Archivist.

Repository for paper or electronic materials

The BCIT Archives welcome donations from faculty, students, alumni, and the public. Items must reflect the history of BCIT, which includes predecessor institutions such as the Federal-Provincial Trades and Technical Institute, the British Columbia Vocational School, or the Pacific Vocational Institute. The Archives accepts only unconditional donations and reserves the right to retain or dispose of material according to the needs of the Institute. Contact us to discuss the suitability of materials you wish to donate. As part of the donation process a completed Deed of Gift form [PDF] should be submitted with the materials.
