Emergencies

If you suspect an overdose, call 9-1-1 right away, and then call Campus Security at 604.451.6856. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects those responding to an emergency, even if you have substances on you.

BCIT is committed to informing students, faculty, and staff about emergency procedures, harm reduction resources, and risks associated with substance use. We aim to raise awareness among the BCIT community through several initiatives:

  • Regular naloxone and harm reduction training will be offered to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Students will receive overdose response and prevention awareness through class presentations on student well-being from the Student Life Office, as well as digital and print materials.
  • Student Housing staff and Resident Advisors are trained on emergency protocols. Students living in residence are informed of naloxone location and use via in-suite posters and ongoing suite meetings.
  • The Healthier Substance Use and Addiction Working Group provides learning opportunities for the campus community, focusing on prevention, reducing stigma, and exploring diverse recovery pathways. For more information, you can contact the Working Group at health-sub-use@bcit.ca.

Safer Drug Use Tips

Not using substances carries the lowest risk. If you do use drugs, there are some steps you can take to reduce potential harms:

  • Use in the presence of others and staggering use.
  • Visit a drug testing site to get your drugs tested.
    • If you are using substances that are unregulated, testing them can help you determine if there are harmful or deadly contaminants that drugs may contain such as fentanyl.
  • Carry naloxone and get trained on how to use it. Naloxone kits are free in BC and can be picked up without a prescription at a site near you or at BCIT distribution locations.
  • Download the Lifeguard app and/or Brave App to be connected to emergency responders if you become unresponsive while using drugs.
  • Foster an inclusive and non-judgmental environment. Discuss safety and overdose response openly and proactively, without judgment. This approach can make a critical difference in emergency situations.
