Overview
BCIT’s Diploma in Residential Interiors builds on the Certificate in Interior Design Fundamentals and provides the opportunity for students to further their education in residential interiors.
Students that complete the courses in the program and graduate with a Diploma in Residential Interiors will have the skills and credential needed to work in the kitchen and bath industries as well as with firms that specialize in the broader residential field.
Most of the INTR course content is based on Canadian industry standards while utilizing parts of an online knowledge base created by the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). Students can become members of the NKBA at no cost. Visit NKBA Student Sign Up to access their knowledge base at a reasonable cost. Completion of the Residential Interiors program also provides students with the knowledge to acquire NKBA Badges on various topics.
INTR courses are offered once per year in the evenings and on Saturdays. Students taking fewer courses than outlined on the matrix must plan accordingly. Reserved seats may be available for students wishing to commit to the four-term diploma track, beginning in the January term each year. Students must have completed or be in their last term of the Certificate in Interior Design to be considered. Please contact the Program Head Lori Burns to confirm availability. Application processing
This program is open to applications beginning:
- February 1st* for the January intake
- May 1st* for the April intake
- October 1st* for the September intake
Entrance requirements
Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first-qualified basis.
- Post-secondary education: Certificate in Interior Design Fundamentals with:
- 70% in COMM 1120
- 65% in all INTD courses
International applicants
This program is available to international applicants who currently have a valid status in Canada. A valid study permit is required prior to starting the program.
Students enrolled in this program must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation. A co-op work permit is required prior to starting the work component.

Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (PLAR)
Students may request to have prior work experience or previously taken courses assessed for course exemption. Students with current industry experience may also be eligible to register for courses on an individual basis. Tuition fees
Flexible Learning (Part-time Studies) tuition is charged on a course-by-course basis. Please see the Flexible Learning Tuition & Fees page for more information on domestic and international tuitions.
Books & supplies
Students are required to have their own laptops for class. Many of the courses require National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) learning material. The NKBA offers complimentary student memberships that provide access to the online versions of NKBA online library at a discounted rate. Visit NKBA Student Sign Up to sign up for a free membership, and then the NKBA Knowledge Base to access the online textbook material.

Program length
With a fast-track schedule, students can complete the program in 15 months (four terms), with the summer term off.Grading
65% in each course to proceed.
Program delivery
In person: This program is delivered on campus with some online components.
The credential is offered through flexible learning (part-time studies), allowing students flexibility in the number of courses they take in any given term; however, each course is offered once per year, and students will need to plan accordingly. A fast-track schedule has been set up for the students who want to complete the diploma in 15 months, available only for those beginning the program in January.
Reserved seats may be available for students wishing to commit to the four-term diploma track. Please contact the Program Head, Lori Burns to confirm availability. The remaining seats in each course will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students are responsible for checking the prerequisites for each course before registering. Please note that INTR courses are currently offered once per year in the terms outlined in the program matrix.

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.

Apply for graduation
Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit to Student Information and Enrolment Services.
Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.
All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
