Course details
This course will take the student through the business aspects of a typical residential project. Students will discuss how to establish a client’s program, create broad budgets, communicate design intent, establish project schedules, prepare appropriate documentation, conduct site reviews and fulfill contract administration on behalf of the client. The course will examine topics pertaining to private practice ownership, basic record keeping, and communication strategies with employers, suppliers, contractors and other consultants. Students will be introduced to conflict resolution techniques, customer service principles and standards for ethical conduct. Students will explore situations in the workplace from an employee vs employer perspective, how to prepare for interviews, what constitutes a raise in salary and proper conduct in the studio and beyond. Students will be introduced to industry organizations such as the NKBA and IDC.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of basic accounting, record keeping, and human resource management.
- Discuss the professional and ethical responsibilities of a kitchen and bath designer as outlined by the NKBA code of conduct.
- Discuss the responsibilities and roles of a kitchen & bath designer, as well as the other major players of a residential design project.
- Prepare contract documents using written and graphic presentations to define and communicate the obligations of all parties.
- Define the 4P’s of a Sustainable Design Business; green planning, processes, product and promotion
- Generate a set of NKBA business management forms.
- Apply interview techniques to analyse and create a project program through client survey and interviews.
- Communicate with a client professionally through oral, written, and visual presentations throughout the various design stages of a residential project.
- Determine accurate fee structures and establish pricing by evaluating all project components.
- Discuss methods for conflict resolution to solve problems that may arise during the execution of a project.
