BCIT's Occupational Health and Safety Diploma program is the most comprehensive training of its kind in Canada. Students learn the skills they need to start a great career in health and safety, in any industry and workplace.
About the program
Our grads learn the operations of health and safety and the business side, including human resources, communication, decision-making, and leadership. This is what sets it apart from our Certificate program , which is geared to experienced individuals looking to move into health and safety roles within their existing industry.

What grads can do
BCIT delivers what employers want – skilled and driven individuals. Ninety-five per cent of our Diploma students are hired within two months of graduation. These graduates found work in a wide array of positions including safety inspection, management, planning, and training.

Open to applications beginning October 1st (or next business day).
Entrance requirements
This program has a two-step admission process. Applicants must meet all entrance requirements and will be accepted on a first-qualified basis as long as space remains.
Step 1: Meet the following entrance requirements
- English language proficiency: Category 2 – English Studies 12 (67%) or equivalent
- Chemistry 11 (50%)
- Physics 11 (50%)
- Math: one of the following:
- Pre-Calculus 12 (50%) or
- Foundations of Math 12 (60%) or
- Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses
- Complete the following form for submission with your online application:
- Mandatory Applicant Questionnaire [PDF]: This form will be used with other entrance requirements in the competitive selection for the program.

Step 2: Department assessment
In order to be accepted to this program, all applications will be reviewed by the program area.
Recommended for success
- Familiarity with the use of personal computers
- Academic grades above the minimum
- General work experience (minimum of two years recommended)
- Additional post-secondary academic courses
International applicants
This program is available to international applicants.
Study permit: A valid BCIT study permit is required prior to starting the program.
Students enrolled in this program must complete the mandatory work component to qualify for graduation. A co-op work permit is required prior to starting the work component.

Technology entry
The Technology Entry (TE) program is a full-time, day school program which provides academic upgrading to students wishing to enroll in Computing, Engineering, Electronic, and Health Sciences programs at BCIT.
The TE program provides courses in chemistry, communication, mathematics, and physics that meet program prerequisites for selected programs at BCIT. The TE program also includes an introductory course in computer applications and a learning skills course. The program is supportive to those who require English-language training.

Within two business days of submitting your completed application, BCIT will send a message to your personal and myBCIT email addresses. All correspondence regarding your application will be posted to your online myCommunication account at my.bcit.ca. We will send you an email when a new message is posted. It is important to watch for these emails or regularly check your account online.
You can expect to receive communication concerning the status of your application within four weeks.

Program Details
The science-oriented diploma program combines studies in safety, health, engineering and business. This ideal combination prepares the student to understand the potential safety and health hazards of the work environment, as well as the human relations involved in improving the workplace environment.
Program length
Two years, full-time beginning in September each year.
Grading
The minimum passing grade for all safety (OCHS) courses is 70%. For students those who have taken the OCHS courses through the Certificate Program and applying for credit must have 70% in OCHS courses.

Program structure
Effective February 1, 2008, the Occupational Health and Safety Department implements the following department policy #005:
- BCIT OH&S Diploma students registered in the 1st and 2nd levels of the diploma program may not register and enrol into 3000 and 4000 level OH&S courses through the BCIT OH&S Diploma program or the BCIT Part-time Studies OH&S Certificate program.
- BCIT OH&S Diploma students may not take 1st and 2nd level OH&S courses concurrently with 3000 and 4000 level OH&S courses.
- Exceptions will be considered by the Department Program Head under the following conditions:
- BCIT OH&S Diploma Students must provide a letter to the Program Head supporting their reasons for enrollment in 3000 and 4000 level courses.
- Letters of submission will be reviewed by the Department Program Head and Associate Dean.
- Decisions will be sent to students in writing by the Department Program Head.

Occupational health and safety is a dynamic, collaborative career. Our focus on business and leadership skills gives students the tools they need to manage, implement, and drive health and safety initiatives in any workplace.
Career opportunities
Annual salary starts from $65,000 – $95,000, with contract work from $40 – $100 per hour in jobs such as:
- OCHS coordinator
- OCHS environmental specialist
- OCHS officer, advisor, or manager
- OCHS environmental or security director
Occupational health and safety careers offer room to grow. In later stages of their career, many of our grads find work in areas such as advanced leadership, human resources, and in MBA programs.
Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education.
