Sarah Steinke, Human Resources Leader, Garibaldi Glass
After receiving a B.A. in Psychology from Simon Fraser University and working in Banking, Sarah discovered a passion for business. HR seemed to combine these two worlds rather nicely so I enrolled in BCIT’s HR Post Diploma Program. Upon graduation, she had 3 lucrative job offers and started her career as a sole HR Generalist in a fast-paced High Technology company. She was quickly promoted to HR Manager and then HR Director and member on the Executive team. Unfortunately, over the following three years, external influences forced the business to restructure down to a point where only 10 out of 40 employees remained. This was also a fantastic learning experience for her career. She spent a few more years in the technology industry before being introduced to the manufacturing industry. At first sight, it didn’t seem as shiny or sexy as the fast-paced, high-growth and high-profit margins seen in the high-tech industry but she gave it time and she is glad she did. There is a sense of pride that she experiences when she sees the tangible products her company creates.
She is now the Human Resources Leader to one of the West Coast’s largest leading glass fabricators and she loves it! She loves coaching team members to reach their fullest potential and implement human resources strategies and programs that support the business and seeing those results realized. HR is a great career choice as it provides unlimited opportunity to grow and learn.

Business Consulting Project
A BCIT Business Consulting Project provides second year Human Resource Management students the opportunity to work over a 10 week period with an organization to solve a human resource problem or challenge. Students work in a team of two or three to improve human resource functions and systems for an industry client. Students complete a comprehensive written report and make an oral presentation to the client outlining their recommendations and solutions.
Business Consulting Projects are different from traditional co-op and internship programs. Students are not assigned to actual positions, but rather fill a consulting role for businesses and organizations. Each project has a BCIT faculty member that serves as an advisor for the student consulting team and a mentor or project champion who works for the client organization. Exit surveys from participating companies show that the completed strategic business solutions have a value that far surpassed their expectations.
