Global Business Studies

This first level course is an introduction to the dynamic forces which influence effective communication in business between people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Participants will acquire cross-cultural knowledge and build intercultural expertise and critical thinking skills through readings, class discussions, exercises, and role-playing. The goal is to learn skills that will help students to be effective in a variety of cultures. The course consists of a one-hour lecture and a two-hour lab each week. The lectures provide the theory and demonstrations; the labs provide opportunities to apply the theory. Students will have some choices in project applications.

Educates the student on the importance of managing operations across all industries by presenting the fundamentals in productivity improvement based on a systematic, scientific problem solving methods. Includes economic feasibility, recording techniques, assembly and analysis of data, critical examination, the development and selection of alternative solutions. Case materials explore applications to manufacturing, warehouse, office, materials management and general management. Students uncomfortable with basic algebra applications are encouraged to take OPMT 0199 prior to the course.

Examines how the operating environment affects trade and trading relationships. The course of studies covers topics related to the location of markets, the infrastructure necessary for a successful market, current trade patterns and future trends in trading. Emphasis will be placed on explanations of how the operating environments affect production, transportation and marketing.

This three credit basic language and culture course is designed for students who have no Chinese background and who have never studied Mandarin before. By passing this course, students will develop four basic language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese as well as to have basic knowledge in Chinese culture. The course will include communicative classroom activities and on-line practices to enable students to have a good command of the Chinese pronunciation system and basic grammar knowledge. At the end of the course, students will be able to conduct simple daily conversations and to read and write short sentences. This CINT1210 addresses practical needs in real-life situations. Each class is based on a few scenario(s) that contain the most commonly used expressions. In addition, the course covers many aspects of the Chinese culture. Verbal, non-verbal and multimedia materials will be employed to help enhance all four language skills.

​This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Spanish. Students will develop the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), gain knowledge of Hispanic cultures, and learn how culture impacts business practices. Through interactive classroom activities and utilizing Spanish first-language multi-media materials, students will learn business terminology and the professional communication skills needed to handle business situations. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the Hispanic business environments through a range of individual and group activities, assignments and examinations.

This course is designed for students with no prior knowledge of Dutch. Students will develop the four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), gain knowledge of the Dutch culture, and learn how culture impacts business practices. Through interactive classroom activities and utilizing Dutch first-language multi-media materials, students will learn business terminology and the professional communication skills needed to handle business situations. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the business environment in Dutch-speaking countries through a range of individual and group activities, assignments and examinations.

The focus of this course is to help students identify the elements of effective online storytelling using journalistic principles. Students will research stories which reflect the experience of studying in different cultures and learning through the BCIT International Field School model to help develop their news sense. The course will take students through the essentials of how to find a strong, focused news and information-based stories and how to effectively interview to support the focus of their stories. They will also learn how to communicate that story with written and visual elements online. Students will share their reflections on their experience with international learning and storytelling in different cultures through the creation of a travel blog.

​This course provides the opportunity for students to study abroad and immerse themselves in another culture while learning about international business practices. The course is delivered within a SoB+M field school and course focus will vary depending on each field school location. Past course topics included luxury marketing (Austria and Italy), business innovation (Japan), doing business in Europe, and sustainable business. During the field school, students will attend lectures, hear from international guest speakers, visit companies abroad, and participate in immersive cultural activities to develop their understanding of specific business topics while building a global perspective and cultural awareness. This course is equivalent to a 3.0 credit course at the undergraduate level.

​Provides the opportunity to study abroad and to immerse oneself in another culture while participating in class lectures and discussions. Students will be exposed to the visual Culture of 20th and 21st century using design, including architecture, objects, automobiles graphic and fine arts to disseminate the ideas. The work of key designers of this time period will be examined and discussed to understand the historical reasons for their development and the impact on the emergence of Japan as a leader in Visual Design Culture today. In order to make this connection, Japan will be compared to Western cultures.

​We all manage risk every day, mostly without being conscious of it. This course will introduce students to modern Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) theories. Students will have the opportunity to identify, analyze and manage (control) risk in conventional and unconventional ways. They will document and apply proven risk management tools to real life scenarios and have the opportunity to meet Risk Managers in a guest lecture format. Upon completion of the course, students will have the ability to apply practical risk management theories to their personal and professional lives.

Much of our experience in looking is grounded in habit rather than analysis. Through cultural theory and concepts, this course explores how meaning is both created and transmitted in the visual world.

This course explores various frameworks and practical techniques in cross-cultural management in the global context. It exposes students to issues and problems that inevitably arise in international business when managers have to deal with culturally determined differences in values, attitudes and behaviours. The course assists students in developing intercultural competence, leadership and negotiation skills to successfully solve problems and gain on opportunities in a multicultural environment. While discovering own cultural identity and learning to identify cultural aspects of verbal and nonverbal behaviour of persons from different cultures, students come to recognize cultural differences that create challenging management situations. Specific topics include understanding the foundations of culture and cultural frameworks; motivation, leadership and decision making across cultures; negotiation and conflict resolution in global business settings; understanding organisational culture; leading multicultural teams and culturally diverse organisations. Students apply the acquired knowledge and gain relevant skills during hands-on activities such as scenario-based discussions and case studies.

The growing importance of global marketing is one aspect of a sweeping transformation that has profoundly affected the people and industries of many nations during the past 40 years. Today, global marketing is used to realize a company's full potential. This course reflects current issues and events while offering conceptual and analytical tools that will help students apply traditional marketing planning, implementation and evaluation techniques, including the 4Ps, segmenting, targeting and positioning, and market entry strategies, to global marketing. It will also examine the social and cultural environments and the role of social media in the expanding global market place.

Inspiration, intuition and innovation. What is your brand culture? How is it represented and to whom? Brand Innovation and Development examines the critical steps and expertise involved in developing and presenting a successful brand, product, service or experience from concept to delivery. It begins with understanding brand users and how they co-create brand meaning to shape products and systems. Building and maintaining a brand position while managing growth or refreshing a brand to enhance consistency and relevance are also explored.

​Introduces students to the harmonized system of exporting and importing and details many of the commonly encountered situations at Canada Customs. The USA, EEC and most OECD countries use the same documentation and valuation system for customs purposes. This course also introduces students to the basic Free Trade Agreements that impact Canadian businesses.

This course provides an understanding of the major economic issues involved in the provision of transportation services. The course will analyze the factors which determine the supply and demand for these services. Both practical and theoretical aspects of transportation economics, including both the domestic and international scenes, will be undertaken. Emphasis will be placed on applying these economic concepts to transportation problems. This course is 36 hours in the classroom and 12 hours online using the BCIT Learning Hub system
