Course details

​Wood processing cutting tools are an essential part of any sawmill. Their safe and effective operation is a key factor for the profitability of a plant. This course provides a basic description of machinery and processing tools employed at every stage of the lumber manufacturing process. The focus is on the function of the tool in the production line, the main components of the tool, basic service requirements, and safety standards for operation and maintenance of the tool. The course provides a foundation for managing operational needs and supporting technical staff who service the tools. Students engage in their learning through online activities across the term, and in-class activities during an onsite week. Students’ knowledge is assessed through online discussions, quizzes, and the final exam as well as through practical projects.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the properties of wood and how they impact wood processing.
  • Describe the most common types of wood machining and their function.
  • Explain common wood machining failures and prevention measures.
  • Explain the basic requirements for preparation and maintenance of cutting tools.
  • Describe the main steps for setting up wood machining equipment.
  • Identify safety hazards and risks associated with operating and maintaining wood cutting tools.
