Course details
COMM 1169 teaches the basic skills for effective writing and speaking in the field of engineering. The course covers the layout, content and graphic techniques for technical writing and speaking. Assignments include summaries, instructions, process and/or mechanism descriptions, professional emails, a work plan, critical assessments of secondary sources, and a team-based oral presentation on sustainability, renewable energy, or clean technology. Critical reflection, feedback opportunities, and oral/aural activities are embedded throughout lectures and labs. Interpersonal and intercultural communication are applied and practiced as students are placed in randomly chosen, structured co-operative teams. Detailed, team-based journal entries are written at the end of most lab classes and evaluated by the instructor.

- Use techniques of headings, lists and white space to improve reader access to documents. [7]
- Write clear, concise, and technically correct sentences and paragraphs. [7]
- Apply the pyramid method to write professional emails, direct style only. [7]
- Conduct primary research (site visits/interviewing techniques) to gather information as necessary. [6, 7]
- Create, format and integrate graphics according to engineering standards. [7]
- Collaborate as part of a structured cooperative team to accomplish work-related communication tasks. [6]
- Deliver a professional, team-based oral presentation on an engineering-related topic or a topic related to sustainability. [6, 7]
- Write mechanism descriptions. [7]
- Write a short, informational report in memo style. [7]
- Apply critical thinking skills to secondary sources and document these; use BCIT library resources effectively. [7]
