- International Fees
International fees are typically 3.12 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
Course Overview
This course builds on the foundation of CIVL 2121, continuing with a discussion of the relationship between applied loads and the resulting stresses and deformations produced in common structural elements. Topics include beam deflections, combined stresses, stress transformations, Mohr's circle, column buckling, and torsion. A laboratory component is included in the delivery of this course.
Prerequisite(s)

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Determine the elastic buckling loads of columns with various support conditions.
- Use standard equations in conjunction with the principle of superposition to calculate the deflection of bending members.
- Set up and perform laboratory tests to determine bending stresses and strain distribution and buckling properties of timber specimens.
- Describe the expected failure mode of short, intermediate, and long timber columns.
- Describe the principles that underlie the use of electrical resistance strain gauges and applications of electrical resistance strain gauges in current civil engineering practise.
Effective as of Fall 2010
