Course details

This course provides the statistical background necessary for students to understand tools used later in the Six Sigma courses included in the program. Includes: (1) descriptive statistics, including numerical and graphical presentation of data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, (2) elementary probability, and (3) introduction to inferential statistics through selected topics such as sampling, confidence limits of the mean, hypotheses testing and simple linear regression. Students who have taken OPMT 1197 Statistics for Business and Industry, with a grade of C+ or more, can use OPMT 1197 as a substitute for OPMT 1797.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Analyse data presented in frequency distributions, histograms and ogives.
  • Apply the common rules of probability.
  • Calculate standard measures of location and dispersion of data.
  • Interpret confidence intervals for means and proportions.
  • Determine sample sizes for estimating means and proportions.
  • Perform hypothesis tests for means and proportions.
  • Perform a chi squared test of independence for contingency tables.
  • Interpret simple linear regression and correlation.
  • Use basic statistical concepts and tools to deal with uncertainty and variability in business situations.
