Course details
Discusses how to coordinate, develop, implement, and maintain an OH&S program within an organization. Explores how political, cultural , economic, and industry climates as well as corporate and personal values influence safety culture. Introduces management commitment, employee involvement, communication, supervision, education and training, safety recognition, safety policy, and safety committees. Provides legal, moral, and economic reasons for implementing a safety program. Outlines how to develop the policies and procedures required for a written OH&S program including workplace inspections, accident investigations, record keeping, first aid, ergonomics, emergency preparedness, job hazard analysis, training, work procedures and regular program review.

This is a one-time option to extend for another 12-week term at a reduced tuition fee. Course work submitted in the Winter Term will be retained; you are ONLY required to submit outstanding course work. Tutor support available by e-mail (or by phone, if pre-arranged). Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the role and functions of standard setting bodies in relation to fire prevention and protection
- Explain the basic codes/standards as applied to fire safety
- Summarize basic fire detection and control systems and devices
- Explain why safety programs are needed and how values influence program success.
- Describe the relationship between a successful safety program, effective leadership and communication, and a strong commitment to safety.
- Describe the key components of a safety program and how program information should be organized.
- Identify hazard recognition, evaluation, and control methods that must be included in the safety program.
- Apply education, training, communication, program promotion and employee participation needs to program design.
- Outline supervisory issues that must be addressed in the safety program.
- Summarize health and occupational hygiene requirements necessary for inclusion in most safety programs.
- Apply total loss control principles to safety programming requirements.
- Describe the process necessary for successful safety program implementation.
- Explain methods to measure and enhance safety performance that will ensure continual safety program improvement.
