Course Overview
Explores the general concepts of legislation relevant to the safety field. The history of the Canadian legal system sets the tone for introducing the concepts of workers' compensation, safety regulation, due diligence, consultation and enforcement. Critically compares OH&S systems in Canada, the United States, and around the world. Introduces Canadian legislation and other safety regulations. You need access to a copy of your governing OH&S legislation.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Apply OHS legislation to Canadian provincial and federal jurisdictions.
- Research both federal and provincial legislation to determine legal requirements.
- Describe the role and function of OHS and workers’ compensation systems.
- Describe the enforcement process in several OHS jurisdictions.
- Outline the systems in several jurisdictions for workers’ compensation claims, assessments, and experience rating systems.
- List the basic requirements of a due diligence defence for OHS, and develop recommendations to prevent or defend against litigation.
- Compare and contrast the OHS systems and the workers’ compensation systems in Canada, the United States, and several other countries.
- Access several OHS standards organizations.
