Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Develop a learning contract that effectively illustrates learning goals, learning strategies, and evaluation criteria using critical thinking skills and CNA competencies.
- Successfully complete 120 hours of clinical time in a selected nephrology nursing practice areas (such as peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis, vascular/dialysis access, pediatric nephrology, diabetic nephropathy/ management clinics and renal transplant).
- Communicate effectively and build relationships with multidisciplinary teams in a selected areas of nephrology practice.
- Recommend a resolution to an ethical issue utilizing the CNA code of ethics and a variety of ethical frameworks designed to assist nephrology nurses in resolving ethical concerns and dilemmas.
- Discuss how and when nephrology nurses should assist clients and families with advance care planning and end-of-life care.
- Explain the renal transplantation process, including donor/recipient evaluation, transplant surgery, immunosupression, and associated risks and complications such as rejection and infection.
- Identify and describe complementary and adjunct modalities that are available to renal clients.
- Identify and describe commonly used medications and agents in persons receiving renal replacement therapies.
