Course Overview
Through online readings, activities, interactions and instructor support, this course focuses on MR imaging techniques, procedures and clinical applications of the head and neck. This course introduces key technologist controlled parameters and pulse sequences. The emphasis is placed on patient positioning, pulse sequence optimization, image quality, and the use of contrast media. This course also details relational anatomy as it pertains to MR Imaging as well as common pathologies. The majority of the course focuses on equipment, patient positioning techniques, image optimization and common usage of contrast media. Indications for MR imaging are covered from the perspective of the best possible protocol sequences and imaging planes needed to outline pathology of the head and neck.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the anatomy of the head and neck, its cross-sectional images and physiology relating to magnetic resonance imaging.
- Select the optimal coil choice to image the area of interest in the head and neck.
- Identify additional ancillary equipment needed to image the area of interest in the head and neck.
- Understand the indications of gadolinium contrast agents and their applications, properties, contraindications, reactions and safety.
- List strategies for patients who are anxious and claustrophobic.
- Apply knowledge, safety and considerations when working within the MRI environment.
- Determine the parameters pertaining to each pulse sequence.
- List and understand the common pulse sequences used for the head and neck.
- Recognize artifacts in the head and neck.
- Explore imaging options used to enhance the image and to minimize artifacts.
- Determine the limit and extent of coverage for the area of interest.
- Recognize pathologies and disease processes in head and neck imaging.
- Explore high field magnetic fields and other advanced imaging options.
