Course Overview
This course starts with a broad overview of the different levels of government, their inter-relationships and influence on local city operations. Weekly sessions then provide broad information on roads, drainage, sanitary sewers, water distribution, and solid waste collection, with emphasis on public works operations. The course will conclude with concepts of asset and maintenance management of municipal infrastructure. On completion, students will be eligible to continue with additional courses in wastewater collection, water distribution, stormwater management or roadworks maintenance.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Describe the relationship of Public Works to other levels of government.
- Identify detailed elements of a road classification system and typical maintenance activities.
- Describe general concepts of stormwater management and sanitary waste collection.
- Discuss the general concepts of a water distribution system and typical maintenance activities.
- Discuss the general concepts of solid waste collection and recycling operations.
- Discuss the general concerns for safety and attributes of good public relations.
- Describe the primary objectives of asset management and its relationship to maintenance activities.
