Course Overview
COMP 3653 is an intensive course intended for applicants to the Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Systems. This course covers Introduction to Data Communications and Operating Systems Concepts. This course aims to provide the students with a comprehension of systems and networking concepts to continue in the Bachelor of Technology program. The course also integrates in class exercises and online discussions and assignments through D2L to facilitate the students' learning and comprehension. Topics include: 1) Operating Systems Concepts (Computer systems and operating systems structures, Process Management (processes, threads, scheduling deadlocks), Storage Management (memory management, virtual memory), and I/O Systems) and 2) Networks and Data Communications (Basic Concepts, OSI Model (physical layer, data link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer, application layer) and Signals, Error Detection and Correction, Data Link Protocols.
