Course Overview
This course introduces the Canadian legal system including its development, and elements such as constitutional law, the Charter, torts, contracts, and business relationships. Emphasis is on the importance of business law to occupational health and safety and application by the OH&S professional.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Competently and accurately identify and discuss legal matters related to business in the context of an occupational health and safety professional.
- Identify issues related to occupational health and safety within the context of the legal environment.
- Describe the concept of law and its application in the court system.
- Recognize key government and regulatory bodies and the associated administrative practices that impact businesses.
- Explain key torts and tort laws that impact businesses.
- Describe the key requirements of contracts and the factors that affect them.
- Describe the features, issues and remedies of commercial relationships.
- Differentiate between types of businesses including sole proprietorships, partnerships and corporations.
- Distinguish between and describe the key features of types of property laws including intellectual and physical property.
