Days of Significance are a way to raise awareness and honour the historical and cultural diversity in our community. By recognizing these Days of Significance, we are contributing to a more equitable and inclusive society.
While historically BCIT has tried to honour as many days as possible, the hundreds of religious observances, municipal/national/provincial/ observances, and international/organizational recognitions, in addition to statutory holidays, make it unfeasible to recognize all days across BCIT communication platforms. The dates included below are recognized through BCIT social media channels and may also be recognized through events, stories on our website, executive communications, or other activations.
Importantly, the Days of Significance calendar is a starting point. It does not prevent schools, service departments, or Institute committees from recognizing ANY holidays and observances in their own way. If you have any questions or feedback about this resource, please reach out to rdi@bcit.ca.
BCIT’s Days of Significance calendar is based on a framework (or “pillars”) that identify the holidays and observances to be included in our calendar. The pillars are:
Upholds the BCIT values.
We pursue collaboration, engage with respect, and champion diversity of experiences, ideas, cultures, and perspectives, fostering a community permeated with equality and inclusivity.
Activates communications that empower equity-deserving groups.
We forward the work of the BCIT Strategic Plan and commit to the BCIT mandate.
Supports authentic engagement and conversation.
We prioritize calendar space for relevant events, education, content, and action taking place within the BCIT community by the BCIT community – including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and partners.
Promotes strategic use of BCIT resources and collaborations.
As a community we activate specific channels, partnerships, and the capacity of our people, schools, and departments in support of a practical and sustainable communications calendar.
