Overview
The Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM) apprenticeship program (formerly Commercial Transport) requires time spent on the job and in-school training. A Truck and Transport Mechanic trainee must complete a four-year program including workplace and in-school hours of training as follows:
- Technical Training: 4 levels, 840 hours
- Registration in the following levels of training at BCIT:
- Level 1, 2, 3 Heavy Mechanical Trades (HMT)
- Level 4 Truck and Transport Mechanic (TTM)
- Work based training: 6,360 hours
After completion of training, a passing grade on the interprovincial exam will result in the SkilledTradesBC Certificate of Qualification (Truck and Transport Mechanic), Certificate of Apprenticeship and the Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement.
The program
Students work on mechanical and electronic components of vehicles. This includes most vehicle systems such as fuel, brake, steering and suspension systems, transmission, emission control and exhaust systems, engines, and electrical, cooling and air conditioning and refrigeration.

- Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET): Level 1, 2, 3
- Diesel Engine Mechanic (DEM): Levels 1, 2
- Transport Trailer Technician (TTT): Level 1

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.
