Sterile Field and the Aseptic Environment

This is the first badge for the Sterile Field and the Aseptic Environment (SFAE) microcredential. In this badge, learners will receive a fundamental introduction to the aseptic environment, covering environmental controls and sterilized items. Learners will explain how sterility and asepsis are used to maintain a safe environment for clients, self, and others. The focus of this badge is on practical knowledge within an environment ranging from semi-restricted to unrestricted. The badge concludes with a final quiz to allow an opportunity for learners to apply the badge concepts in a virtual simulated scenario. Subsequently, participants can progress to NSPO 1120, where they will further enhance their understanding and develop strategies applicable to a restricted setting, such as the perioperative environment.​
Prerequisite(s):

• Completion of grade 11.

This badge is the second badge for the Sterile Field and the Aseptic Environment (SFAE) microcredential. The badge builds on the foundation of an aseptic environment presented in NSPO 1110. The focus is on developing knowledge of sterility and aseptic techniques for clients inside an operating room where invasive procedures are performed. Learners will continue advancing their knowledge around concepts of sterility and asepsis to keep clients safe from the risk of infection by introducing surgical zones and attire that is required within semi-restricted and restricted zones. In addition, learners will examine roles and best practices to maintain a safe and supportive perioperative environment for clients and team members. The badge concludes with a final quiz to allow an opportunity for learners to apply the badge concepts in a virtual simulated scenario. Following successful completion, learners can advance to NSPO 1130, where they will develop knowledge of safe client care in an ambulatory type setting from a nursing lens. ​

• Employed in a health or healthcare-related field (i.e. medical representatives, RNs, LPNs, care aids, medical radiography technicians, lab techs) or by special approval from the program.

This badge is the third badge of the Sterile Field and the Aseptic Environment (SFAE) microcredential. The badge builds on and draws upon the foundation of an aseptic environment presented in NSPO 1110 and NSPO 1120. The focus is on developing an understanding of safe client care for smaller procedure sites such as an ambulatory care setting. Learners will continue considering the concepts of sterility and asepsis with emphasis on the nursing role. The badge introduces theory related to client care and assessments, instrumentation, and intraprocedural management while using best nursing practices to establish and maintain a minor sterile field. The badge concludes with a final quiz to allow an opportunity for learners to apply the badge concepts in a virtual simulated scenario. Note: Completion of this microcredential does not qualify you as a perioperative nurse. Please refer to the BCIT Perioperative Nursing Program for the required education and certification. ​

• S in NSPO 1110 and S in NSPO 1120
• Employed in a healthcare area with direct client care in ambulatory procedure or surgical settings (i.e. RNs, LPNs, RNs, RT, interventional radiology technicians) or by special approval from the program.
