Volunteer criteria
The type of volunteer work the Medical Radiography program requires of applicants is that of an "interactive" role rather than an "informational" role. Volunteers are required to interact with patients that exemplify some of the challenges healthcare workers face on a regular basis. For instance, relating to patients that have language barriers, are less mobile, are hard of hearing, or have physical or mental challenges. Examples of interactions are reading to patients, playing games, and supporting with their non-medical needs such as providing assistance with wheelchairs and feeding etc.
Some of the best environments to gain this all-inclusive sensory experience of sounds, smells, and sights of the hospitalized patient include:
The following work experience will not qualify for this requirement:
The volunteer experience must be current within one year from the start of the application intake cycle.
A volunteer validation letter is required from the facility supervisor or volunteer coordinator. The letter must be on business letterhead and include start and end dates, the number of volunteer hours completed and the roles and responsibilities performed.
Once these and any other outstanding conditions have been met, notification of full acceptance will be granted.
Clinical requirements
Note: Effective immediately, all health care workers who come into contact with patients at publicly-funded health care facilities or in the community, including long-term-care facilities, are required to have influenza vaccine or wear a mask during flu season. This policy affects all students who will be entering a clinical setting.
Face Respirator Fit TestingA face piece respiratory fit test is required before students are permitted to enter the clinical practicum. Upon successful completion of the fit test, the original certificate must be presented to the program and annual re-fitting is required. Students are expected to carry their certificate with them at all times during their practicum.
For the respirator fit testing, testing with a N95 respirator is required and must be performed in accordance with CSA Standard CAN/CSA-Z94.4-02. Fit testing must also include inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and storage of protective equipment. Students will be given specific instructions on how to access fit testing by the program prior to the first clinical practicum. Students are responsible for paying for the annual fit test while in the program.

Mission Statement
The Medical Radiography program will provide quality education to graduate professional medical radiography practitioners capable of adapting to the complex and evolving health care environment.
The goals of the Medical Radiography program are to graduate competent medical radiography technologists by providing:
- quality medical imaging education with an integration of didactic and clinical practice
- multifaceted learning opportunities in a safe environment
- environments conducive to developing humanistic skills required to foster patients’ safety and well-being in a diverse society
- critical thinking opportunities focusing on the CAMRT competencies while fulfilling provincial employability requirements
- professional best practice opportunities to enable graduates to become an integral member of the healthcare team
- opportunities to develop lifelong learning skills
Medical radiography is not a hazardous occupation. The dangers of radiation are well recognized and rigidly controlled.
Throughout the program, students receive intensive theoretical and practical instruction through lectures, labs, blended and online courses. Students are expected to act as simulated patients to learn positioning techniques, as well as interpersonal skills.
In addition, students gain practical experience in the clinical environment. Clinical experiences are located in various hospital sites throughout Vancouver Coastal, Fraser Health and Interior Health Authorities. These experiences are designed to promote confidence, competence and professional practice through repetition of the “learn, understand, apply” learning cycle. Students continue with their academic studies via concurrent online courses throughout their clinical terms.
The Medical Radiography program uses a computerized student site-matching program together with student input for the assignment of clinical sites. The clinical sites are located in the Interior, Kootenays and Lower Mainland. Although students provide input in for determining the location of each clinical experience assignment, there is no guarantee that students will receive their preferred placements. Students must acknowledge that one or more of their clinical placements could be at any of our clinical sites located throughout the Province. Students must have personal transportation, as not all clinical facilities are easily accessible by public transportation. Students are responsible for providing their own transportation and accommodations while on the clinical practicum.
Program length
24 months, full-time
Four clinical practicum rotations at three to four different sites will be scheduled within this time frame.
Grading
All didactic (instructional) courses require a 65% mark to pass. All clinical experience is competency-based and therefore has a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading.
To continue from one term of the program to the next, all courses must be successfully completed in each term. To graduate, all courses must be successfully completed.
Accreditation
This program is accredited by the Health Standards Organization (HSO) and its affiliate accreditation (AC) through their new EQUAL Canada program.
Program delivery
In person: This program is delivered on campus.
Program location
Burnaby Campus

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.

I plan on working part time while going to school. What does the program recommend?
Given the rigorous expectations of the program, it is not recommended that you attempt to work.
How many hours per week will I spend on school work?
Classes are scheduled from 0830 – 1730 Monday through Friday. Outside of class time, students are required to work on homework assignments, group projects, and private or group study. An average of 4-5 hours homework per day can be anticipated. During clinical placements, students need to be prepared to be scheduled for occasional evening, weekend, or night shifts.

You can submit your application while actively working on your prerequisites however full acceptance will only be granted upon completion of all program requirements.
What if I have the prerequisites, but they are from more than five years ago?
While there isn’t a specific recency condition for our entrance requirements, students who have completed their courses more recently tend to find the course work less challenging.
What if I write challenge exams and do not achieve the relevant grade?
- You will have only one opportunity to write each challenge exam.
- If you are unsuccessful, you must upgrade to meet prerequisites.
- If a student registers and writes a challenge exam a second time they will be given the mark from their first writing
- Upgrading can be completed through your local school district or post-secondary institution.
Will you consider out-of-country credentials as meeting the prerequisite requirements for the MRAD program?
BCIT will assess out-of-country credentials for courses that meet equivalency, recency, and the relevant letter grade.
Do you consider GPA within the selection process?
No, applicants only need to meet the minimum 73% for the entrance requirements.
Can I apply for transfer credit for my college/university courses?
If you feel you have completed courses equivalent to the MRAD program courses, you may apply for individual transfer credit within the first two weeks of the program start. Please note: If individual course transfer credit is granted, this will not reduce your tuition or the duration of the program; it will only reduce your course load.
