Overview
The 4 years Industrial Electrician Apprenticeship program including 40-week in-school training will prepare qualified, skilled and job-ready apprentices for various industries. The program will produce graduates skilled in the application, installation, repair, and calibration and tuning of electrical equipment and control devices used in a variety of industrial sectors.
Graduates will have the knowledge and the hands-on experience in all areas of computerized control, programmable logic controllers and electrical devices. The program will aim to respond to the growing need of highly skilled apprentices in industries such as LNG, pulp and paper, mining, utilities plants, shipbuilding among others.
This program will appeal to learners who enjoy electrical and mechanical work. This program will emphasize hands-on, practical training using equipment typically encountered in industry. It is a viable option for those wishing to enter into an apprenticeship in the field of Industrial Electrical.
The program goals, program objectives and program learning tasks are outlined in the ITA Industrial Electrician Program Outline. The processes for achieving certification are outlined in the ITA Industrial Electrician Program Profile. Students will acquire the specific knowledge and skills required to be successful in the industry, and to achieve Industry Training Authority certification with Red Seal endorsement.
Program goals
Upon successful completion of the proposed apprenticeship, graduates will be able to:
- Install of electrical devices and components found in industrial settings.
- Inspect and troubleshoot electrical equipment such as motors, generators, pumps, heavy duty machines, illumination systems, environmental regulating systems, communication systems, and associated electrical controls.
- Repair and service electrical devices and components.
- Calibrate electrical devices and components that are applied to industrial equipment.
- Preventive and predictive maintenance of electrical equipment.
- Install and program basic motor control and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
- Optimize industrial equipment in a variety of industry sectors.
- Troubleshoot and remedy intermittent and ongoing process faults and inconsistencies.
- Maintain calibration records and drawings through accurate documentation.
- Analyse a given situation and establish a plan for remediation of the problem.
- Work and communicate effectively as part of a team.

Pathways
There are a few ways of beginning your new career as an industrial electrician apprentice:
- Take our Electrical Foundation program. By working through a series of practical projects and assignments and theory assignments you'll build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills to make you more employable in an entry-level position. By successfully completing the program, you will also receive credit for the in-school portion of Level 1 of our Industrial Electrician Apprenticeship training.
- Find employment under an industrial electrician who will register you with SkilledTradesBC. In this option, you are indentured to a company as an apprentice industrial electrician, learning basic skills while you are employed. The advantage here is that you earn while you learn.
- Be in possession of a Certificate of Qualification as a Construction Electrician, and wish to pursue a career as an Industrial Electrician.
Entrance requirements
You must be an active apprentice registered with SkilledTradesBC to register for apprenticeship training at BCIT.
Recommended for success
High school graduation or equivalent, including:
- English 12 or English language proficiency
- Any Math 12
- Physics 12
Apprentices should possess good health and the physical condition necessary to meet the demands of the work: good hearing, eyesight and hand/eye coordination. Apprentices with medical or physical difficulties should contact Accessibility Services to arrange an interview with the Institute’s rehabilitation specialist.

Register for Apprentice Training
To register for apprentice training:
- Consult the training schedule to find a date that is suitable to both you and your employer.
- Create your BCIT ID if you don’t already have one.
- Register by phone or email.
- Pay the $200 commitment fee.

BCIT Apprentice Services reserves the right to communicate with SkilledTradesBC and your active employer sponsor about your registration, progress, and related academic information. BCIT also shares apprentice registration information with Work BC. If you have questions about the protection of your personal information, you may contact the BCIT Information Access and Privacy Office.
myCommunication
Within two business days of submitting your completed application, BCIT will send a message to your personal and myBCIT email addresses. All correspondence regarding your application will be posted to your online myCommunication account at my.bcit.ca. We will send you an email when a new message is posted. It is important to watch for these emails or regularly check your account online.
You can expect to receive communication concerning the status of your application within four weeks.

Financial assistance

Program length
The total amount of in-school, technical training for an electrical apprenticeship is 1,200 hours. The four levels of technical training each consist of ten weeks of full-time training.

Graduating & Jobs
After completion of training, a passing grade on the inter-provincial exam will result in the BC Certificate of Apprenticeship, BC Certificate of Qualification, and the Inter-provincial Standard Endorsement, also known as Red Seal.
Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.

Credential
BCIT offers a Diploma of Trades Training for apprentices who have successfully completed their technical training at BCIT and have been granted a British Columbia Trades Qualification (IP/TQ). In trades where there is no requirement to complete a Trades Qualification (TQ), a Certificate of Apprenticeship is acceptable.
