Gasfitting has a rich history and an exciting future Gas is the fastest growing field within the piping industry. To meet current and future efficiency and environmental emissions standards, rapidly changing technology is applied directly to the operation and maintenance of gas fired appliances and equipment.

Whether you are just starting out or advancing your career. BCIT offers a number of paths to rewarding employment within the gas industry.

Gasfitter – Class A Certificate of Qualification entitles the holder to perform the installation or alteration of any gas system and equipment. An applicant for the Gasfitter – Class A Apprenticeship program must hold a Gasfitter – Class B Certificate of Qualification.

A class “B” Gas Fitter Certificate of Qualification entitles the holder to perform the installation or alteration of gas appliances/systems with an input limitation up to and including 120 kW.

Summary of Programs and Courses

Gasfitting Apprenticeship

Gasfitter – Class A – Candidates must first have a Certificate of Qualification for the Gasfitter – Class A. Candidates then must complete two 300-hour terms of classroom training plus 3000 hours of on-the-job work experience as a Gasfitter – Class A apprentice. After successful completion of the classroom training, candidates will write a Provincial Certification Exam through Technical Safety BC and an Interprovincial Red Seal Exam through the SkilledTradesBC. Exam success will result in being awarded the Gasfitter – Class A Certificate of Qualification by the Technical Safety BC and a Red Seal Endorsement on the provincial/territorial Certificate of Qualification.

Gasfitter – Class B – Candidates must complete two 300-hour terms of classroom training plus 3000 hours of on-the-job work experience as a Gasfitter – Class B apprentice. After successful completion of the classroom training, candidates will write a Provincial Certification Exam through Technical Safety BC. Exam success will result in being awarded the Gasfitter – Class B Certificate of Qualification by Technical Safety BC.
