Overview
BCIT has offered a very highly-regarded two-year Diploma in Civil Engineering since opening its doors in 1964. As with any successful educational program, it has evolved through its fifty-year lifespan to address changes in the engineering and construction fields, and reflect current states of practise.
At present, the Diploma in Civil Engineering is one of two credentials available within BCIT’s Civil Engineering program, conferred after successful completion of the first two years of study. At this point, the student may choose to enter the workforce and advance a career as a Civil Engineering Technologist or continue their academic studies towards acquiring an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. These further academic studies are possible for qualified students within the B.Eng. in Civil Engineering program at BCIT, or elsewhere in other Civil Engineering programs across Canada.
The Civil Engineering Technologist is an essential member of the engineering team and contributes to the planning, design and construction of municipal works, residential development, industrial and commercial buildings, highways, environmental protection work and other types of projects. Many graduates have pursued very successful careers as technologists, and the demand from industry for technologists remains extremely strong.
The Program
Presentation of the course material over the first two years is primarily delivered at a foundational level with engineering fundamentals stressed and reinforced across the curriculum. An abundance of learning opportunities is provided to practically apply these fundamentals to the solution of real-world design scenarios. Throughout, opportunities are presented to students to strengthen their graphical, written, and oral communication skills. A significant amount of time in the program is directly related to hands-on-training in material testing, surveying, manual and computer-aided drafting, and instruction in the use of engineering software tools.

Graduate employment outcomes
The BCIT student outcomes report presents summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2021-2023 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2020-2022 graduates and for Degree 2019-2021 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates’ labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.
To view these results, you may need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in your Web browser.
