The Graduate Certificate in Building Energy Modelling is an interdisciplinary program aimed at architects and engineers with background and motivation to pursue a career in the emerging field of building energy modelling.
Well-trained energy modelling professionals with relevant knowledge and skills are in a prime position to inform capital decisions towards energy efficient and innovative building solutions, and lead the profession as it matures as an engineering specialty.
The Graduate Certificate in Building Energy Modelling trains competent energy modellers who are accurate and consistent forecasters, capable of confidently advising stakeholders on decisions affecting the energy performance of buildings. The program will provide the energy modelling industry with a professional credential for both current and recent new-to-practice energy modellers.
The certificate builds on the strengths of the Graduate Program in Building Science at BCIT, with an emphasis on developing a solid understanding of the physical principles underlying building performance, and using these principles to systematically guide the synthesis, analysis, and interpretation of building energy models for optimized building life-cycle performance.
Graduate Certificate Structure and Length
The Graduate Certificate in Building Energy Modelling is comprised of eight courses totaling 22 credits. Five of the courses are regularly scheduled courses offered by BCIT’s Master of Applied Science in Building Engineering/Building Science degree. Three additional new courses have been developed for this credential. Students can expect to complete the requirements in one academic year if they fast-track by registering in multiple courses per term, or in two years if they take a lesser course load. The coursework is structured in three core areas: building science, building energy, and management and communication skills.

Competitive Entry: Two-step process
Step 1: Meet the following entrance requirements
Upload proof of meeting the following to your online application:
- English: one of the following:
- Two years of full-time post-secondary education in English in an English-speaking country with 3.0 credits of post-secondary English, humanities or social sciences (67%) from a recognized institution or
- View other ways to meet the English requirement
- Post-secondary: one of the following:
- A 4-year bachelor’s degree in an engineering field or architecture with a GPA of 2.8 out of 4.0 (70%)* or
- A 4-year bachelor’s degree in a related Science field with a GPA of 2.8 out of 4.0 (70%)*, preferably with an Architectural and Building Technology (ABT) diploma (Building Science option) or equivalent building science industry experience.
* GPA will be calculated by using grades earned in the last two years of full-time study in the undergraduate degree.
Applicants who have completed post-secondary studies outside of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand will require a comprehensive evaluation of their credentials by the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). Credential evaluation reports from other Canadian services may be considered. These reports must include course-by-course evaluations and GPA calculations.
- Math: Linear algebra and differential equations equivalent to UBC Math 221 and UBC Math 255. You are not required to take these specific UBC courses; they are listed here for you to refer to their course descriptions. If you have already studied these subjects as part of your bachelor’s degree, please give particulars in your online application:
- Complete the following form for submission with your online application:
- Mandatory Applicant Questionnaire [PDF]: This form will be used with other entrance requirements in the competitive selection for the program.
Submit the following to the department as directed:
- Two references supporting your academic suitability. Your references may be either academic or professional. Please use the appropriate template:
A letter in addition to the report may also be submitted.
Note: References (reports and letters) must be emailed by the referee to buildingscience@bcit.ca -AND- the reference with the original signature mailed to the address listed at the end of the Referee’s Report form.
Step 2: Department Review
Only complete applications that include all the required supporting documentation will be evaluated. All complete applications will be reviewed by the Graduate Selection Committee and ranked on a competitive basis. The applicants that are best suited for success in the program will be offered a place.
Building envelope performance course
Applicants without building envelope industry experience may be required to enroll in BLDC 3050 - Building Envelope Performance. Applicants will be advised if they need to take this course after their application has been reviewed by the Graduate Selection Committee. Applicants who are required to take this course can do so concurrently with their studies. It is not necessary to complete this course prior to enrolling in the program.

Program Details
Program length
The Graduate Certificate allows students flexibility in the number of courses they take in any given term. A fast-track schedule has been set up for those students who want to complete the Graduate Certificate in 12 months. Students are responsible for checking the prerequisites for each course before registering. Please see the Program Map [PDF] for suggested term by term course selection for fast-track, or completion with a lesser course load [PDF] over two or three years.
Grading
Minimum passing grade for each course is 60%; however, each student is required to maintain a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 75%.
Program delivery
The program will be delivered in a face-to-face format in classroom and research laboratories, seminars and supervisor/student meetings. Classes will be scheduled weekdays mostly during the day with some evening offerings.

Continue your education
The building science courses and the building energy courses in the Graduate Certificate in Building Energy Modelling are available for transfer credit to either the Master of Engineering in Building Science (MEng) or the Master of Applied Science in Building Engineering/Building Science (MASc). Students from the certificate who meet the entry requirements of the MEng or the MASc may apply for those degrees and receive transfer credit for coursework already completed.

Graduating & Jobs
Students in the program develop knowledge to guide the synthesis, analysis, and interpretation of building energy models, and capacity to systematically inform design decisions and recommend actions to improve building energy performance. Following are some examples of how building energy models can support capital building decisions:
- Calculate energy and cost trade-offs in the evaluation of alternative heating, cooling and ventilation systems
- Compare building enclosures based on energy-efficiency and indoor environmental quality
- Evaluate the payback of clean energy technologies such as solar panels, photovoltaics, wind turbines, and geo-exchange technologies
- Compare building systems based on life-cycle costs and carbon emissions
- Compare alternative building energy retrofits
- Help detect anomalies and inefficiencies in the operation of building systems, subsystems, and components
Building energy modelling is central to support compliance with green building certification programs. In North America, the LEED green building rating system, as well as other similar systems around the world, rely on building energy simulations to demonstrate improved building energy performance for certification.
Building energy modelling also supports performance-based compliance with energy codes and standards. The city of Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 Action Plan includes “Green Buildings” as one of five strategic industry clusters; “Clean Technologies” is another cluster. Building energy modelling supports the integration of clean energy technologies in buildings and therefore supports both clusters; as such, a job in building energy modelling is “a true green job”.
Current job opportunities for well-trained building energy modellers include the following:
- Building Energy Modeller or Building Energy Simulation Professional position at architectural, mechanical, or building science firms
- Energy/Sustainability Manager position at building construction management firms
- Energy Efficiency Engineer at firms that provide consulting on buildings’ energy efficiency
- Energy Systems Engineer at firms that verify the energy performance of buildings
- Building Official, Energy Specialist, Project Engineer, or Project Manager working for cities, school districts, or municipalities
- Facility Manager for various types of buildings

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit it to Student Information and Enrolment Services.
Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.
All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
