The Instructional Skills Workshops (ISW) – POLY 1005 – is now part of the Associate Certificate in Polytechnic Teaching program at BCIT. To register and for more information, please visit this page. You will find a course outline, current offerings and registration links.
POLY 1005 – ISW is an excellent first course to take to begin your development as an educator. The ISW focuses on foundational educational skills and can be taken on its own, or can be the first step in a pathway towards the Polytechnic Teaching credential which builds towards more advanced educator competence.
The ISW is conducted in small groups with no more than six participants. The course is offered in multiple formats through the year – fully face to face, blended or fully online. The course begins with the presentation of foundational theory on how students learn best and a lesson planning model to use. Over the remaining sessions participants will present 3 ten-minute mini-lessons to the other participants using the model provided. Your peers will give you written and oral feedback on your mini-lesson. Your mini-lesson will also be recorded for you to view later. Upon successful completion of this workshop you should be able to:
- Write measurable learning outcomes
- Use instructional techniques to promote active learning
- Use common instructional aids
- Evaluate learning
- Develop lesson plans
- Give and receive objective, constructive feedback
- Increase your competence and confidence as an instructor, regardless of the skill and experience level you came in with!
