Invitation to participate in the “We Will Always Remember” Project
Dear Team,
Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 as a way of acknowledging the Residential School experience, to witness and honour the healing journey of the survivors and their families, and to encourage all Canadians to commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. It remembers those who died and it recognizes the survivors and reaffirms that Every Child Matters.
To further promote meaningful dialogue and discussions, BCIT Indigenous Initiatives is grateful to launch the ‘We Will Always Remember’ project. We encourage everyone to spend some time making an Orange Shirt to remember the children who were taken from their families to residential schools across the country. We hope that this activity will allow people moments of meaningful reflection and help further the journey to reconciliation. We invite you to cut, draw, fold, sew an orange shirt or use whatever material you have. You may want to write a loved ones name on the shirt or wishes for hope.
We encourage you to make shirts with your colleagues, students, and family members as a way of learning about Truth and Reconciliation and listening together to the stories of survivors and their families, and to remember those that did not make it.
Once completed, we encourage you to display the shirts and engage in conversations and reflections about residential schools and truth and reconciliation. We hope you will share images of your shirts across social media using the hashtag #WeWillAlwaysRemember in your schools, communities, organizations, and workplaces to ensure awareness continues for the month of September.
Every Canadian must address the root causes of systemic violence and dismantle the colonial ideas, behaviours, and policies that rob Indigenous people of their autonomy and humanity and be part of the shared journey for change.
“Reconciliation is the work of all Canadians. It’s about having the courage to challenge the status quo, and to re-envision education and the type of society we share. Consider what you can do to make your part of the world better, partner in Reconciliation, and seek a world where all voices are heard, honoured, valued, and actioned. We must all be bold and courageous.” Kory Wilson, Executive Director, Indigenous Initiatives and Partnerships
