Notice to applicants

Flexible Learning programs will be adopting the English Language Proficiency standards (Categories 1, 2, and 3) as part of their declaration requirements effective April 2025.

English is the language of instruction and communication at BCIT. All applicants and registrants, regardless of citizenship status or country of origin, must demonstrate a level of English proficiency equivalent to English 12 at a Canadian high school. This language requirement ensures that all students will have the opportunity for success in their chosen courses and programs.

At this time, proof of English language proficiency is not required until you apply for admission to a BCIT program. It is, however, important that you represent your level of English language proficiency truthfully, as failure to do so will result in consequences listed under Policy 5102 – Student Code of Conduct (Non-Academic) [PDF]. In the future, you may not be able to register for any BCIT course or program without proof that you meet BCIT’s English Language Proficiency Standard.

It’s also important to note that, at BCIT, entrance requirements are program-specific. Please note that if you are applying for admission to a program, the entrance requirements remain unchanged. Please refer to the program-specific entrance requirements, which are different than the English Language Proficiency requirements for Flexible Studies courses.
