Important Updates to the Part-Time StudentAid BC Application Process

  • StudentAid BC is transitioning from PDF-based part-time applications to an online portal (SIMS) in November 2024.
  • Students applying for part-time funding after 8:30am on November 8th must apply through StudentAid BC’s online application system. To avoid delays in submitting your application, set up your BC Services Card account as soon as possible. You will be able to create your SIMS account, log in, and apply for funding in late November (between November 21st and 28th, 2024).
  • All Flexible Learning students will require a Specific Course Completion Contract (SCCC) once part-time applications go online. Detailed instructions on the application process will be posted to this website once PDF applications are no longer being accepted.

As a Flexible Learning student, you may be eligible for government student loans and grants to assist in funding your studies.

Before you apply

All students taking Flexible Learning courses must first  declare an eligible program of studyin order to qualify for funding.

Government student loans and grants

Part-time student funding is available through StudentAidBC, including part-time student loans and grants. These programs are available to assist students with study periods of 6-11 weeks, or those studying on a part-time basis (20-59% course load) in an eligible BCIT program. If you are completing Flexible Learning courses on a full-time basis (60% or more of a 100% course load), for a study period of 12 or more weeks, you may be eligible for  full-time funding.

For additional information, visit StudentAidBC, or contact Student Financial Aid & Awards.

Eligibility

Eligiblity is determined on the basis of assessed financial need.

All BCIT students taking Flexible Learning courses who are applying for financial assistance are required to be declared and enrolled in an approved eligible program leading to a BCIT degree, diploma, or certificate.

To declare into an approved eligible program, submit a program declaration. Your program declaration must be approved before financial assistance can be confirmed, and only courses within the approved program will be eligible for financial assistance.

Note that apprenticeship programs do not qualify for StudentAidBC funding. Please contact the Apprentice Services office for information on financial assistance.

Canadian, non-BC residents should apply for government student assistance through their home province.

How to apply

Starting November 8th, we’ll be getting ready for the launch of the new StudentAid BC (SABC) online system (SIMS). During this transition, we will pause processing part-time funding applications until the new system is ready. Please note that you’ll be able to submit applications through SIMS between November 21st and 28th, 2024.

To ensure a smooth application process, we recommend setting up your BC Services Card account ahead of time. This way, you’ll be ready to create your SIMS account, log in, and apply during the November 21-28 window.

This page will be updated with more details as the SIMS part-time application system becomes available.
