Complete a diploma or degree
An Advanced Placement and Prior Learning (APPL) assessment outlines individual advanced standing paths and bridging courses into a program. If you have five or more years of professional industry work experience, you may qualify for an alternative path to complete a diploma or degree as an adult learner.
You must demonstrate that you meet all program entrance requirements and one of the advanced placement eligibility requirements for your pathway.
Note: work experience outside of stated roles will be assessed on an individual basis.
Advanced Placement and Direct Entry eligibility
At least one of the following options:
- Minimum of seven years of progressive work experience, with at least five years in a supervisory role.
- Post-secondary courses, ICES Certified, Diploma or Degree with a minimum of five years of supervisory work experience
- Red Seal or Journeyperson Certificate

APPL assessment process
Step 1: Request an assessment
- Fill out the Contact Form to request your assessment.
- Indicate whether you are an international or domestic applicant, as international students are assessed individually.
Step 2: Gather your documents
Gather the following documents in .pdf format or as stated:
- Your most updated resume, describing in detail all your related industry, supervisory, or managerial work experience (business, financial, marketing, human resources, etc.).
- Two letters of validation with proper letterhead, signed by current or previous employers confirming dates of employment, position(s), and job duties. These may include a letter of reference, job descriptions, contracts, etc.
- Post-secondary transcripts (if applicable).
- Other certificates or training documents (if applicable).
Step 3: Pay your assessment fee
The BCIT Financial Services department will contact you shortly to process your payment. Do not send payment, credit card, or financial information to the EBP team.
Adult Learner Fees
- $250 APPL assessment fee for applicants with Canadian credentials and work experience
- $285 APPL assessment fee for applicants with international credentials and work experience

About your assessment fees
The assessment fee does not guarantee entry into a program. Processing time is between four to six weeks, excluding holidays, but may vary depending on the volume of applicants. The program head, as the subject matter expert, has the final say on accepting or rejecting your assessment.
