Course details

This course introduces students to web design and development using HTML 5, the UTF-8 character set, and the basics of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Students will hand code web pages and style them with CSS. Students will analyze commercial websites in order to gain insight into website design and story-boarding of their own pages. In addition to web design learners will also explore web publishing, web marketing, website maintenance (Internet and intranet) along with other web technologies. This is a distance education web design course offered entirely online. Students must have access to the Internet, a personal e-mail account, and a PC Pentium/Dual Core or Macintosh PPC/Intel with 1gb or more of RAM. Also required is an FTP Client for PC or Macintosh. Links to available FTP software will be provided from within the course documentation.

Prerequisite(s)

  • Students will need to have current PC or Mac operating system, reliable Wi-Fi or cellular data connection as well as an up-to-date version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Microsoft Edge browser is recommended.

  4. This course will be delivered entirely online, however, is an asynchronous course which does not require that you meet each week at a specific time. You will be expected to meet assignment deadlines according to the schedule on the course outline and directions of the instructor. It is important you have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. Please log into learn.bcit.ca using your BCIT student email and password on the first day of class. You will require access to the Adobe Creative Cloud in order to complete this course. Students who are currently registered in one or more BCIT Flexible Learning courses are eligible for a free Adobe Creative Cloud subscription from BCIT. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Describe the form and format of standard website design.
  • Analyze commercial websites in terms of design and quality and prepare a critique of design faults.
  • Employ HTML5 to do simple hand coding.
  • Locate web development resources for help with HTML5 coding.
  • Produce web pages using CSS and HTML5.
  • Employ the UTF-8 character set.
  • Design an effective and attractive mini-website.
  • Using an FTP client, practice web publishing by uploading web pages and images for presentation.
  • Create a website design storyboard for a series of web pages using effective presentation and navigation techniques.
  • Use text and hypertext and basic CSS in web coding.
  • Employ images and sound clips as multimedia elements used in web development.
  • Design a navigation system and use simple CSS in layout following basic web design principles.
  • Describe web publishing, web marketing, and website maintenance (Internet and intranet).
  • Apply animations and video clips designed by others to enhance web pages.
