Course Overview
Students will gain an understanding of the fundamental principles of managing a warehouse and distribution system. The course introduces the concepts, processes, and applications for the effective management and control of distribution channels, warehousing, and transportation systems. This includes topics such as channel network design, distribution inventory management and materials handling functions such as receiving, put-away, restocking, order picking, and cycle counting. At the end of the course, students will explore future and emerging trends impacting warehousing.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe the role of the warehouse or distribution centre in the Supply Chain
- Explain product flow and information flow throughout the supply chain
- Describe the value the Warehouse/Distribution centre provides
- Examine warehouse functions
- Describe how customer expectations impact the requirement for different warehousing and channel designs
- Strategically determine the optimal location of a distribution centre
- Classify inventory
- Explain inventory management
- Determine when to order inventory
- Calculate the amount of inventory required
- Differentiate between an MRP, reorder point and a DRP logic
- Use DRP logic to complete a DRP grid
- Construct a Bill Of Distribution from an example, in order to complete DRP Grids.
- Describe the automatic technology used in the warehouse
- Describe the use of a WMS in planning warehouse activities
- Describe appropriate techniques for storing and handling inventory within the warehouse
- Describe appropriate techniques for picking and preparing inventory for shipping or production
- Describe the role of KPIs in measuring success in a warehouse
- Describe how KPIs are used in a warehouse
- Compare and contrast the various modes of transportation
- Explain transportation management and how it affects other business functions
- Describe the value of blockchain to supply chains.
