Course Overview
This course provides theoretical exposure to fundamental GIS algorithms and spatial information data structures. Students will also gain a practical understanding of 3D GIS computer applications. Topics covered include raster and object file formats, data conversion and display, view transformations, feature generalization, and 3D operations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student should be able to:
- Complete 3D GIS applications using a current industry standard software.
- Describe how to read ASCII coordinate data.
- Discuss how binary files are compressed using a run-length encoding algorithm.
- Identify how to extract image band data from image files.
- Research and present a GIS technical topic to an advanced level GIS audience.
- Compare the problems in various GIS issues by listening to presentations by GIS researchers.
