Course Overview
In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge to undertake comprehensive inspections of structures to ensure the safety of the travelling public in the province of British Columbia. Basic materials used in the construction of bridges, large culverts, and retaining walls and other structures are introduced. Structure types, design features and critical components common to many structures are explained to provide you with the knowledge to assess the impacts of deterioration and damage that commonly occur. You will also learn standardized inspection procedures, terminology, and deficiency identification to support your inspection work. A field guide is included to help you identify components common to all structures and categorize the type and severity of damage or deterioration through a standardized rating system. The field guide ensures a measure of consistency to the inspection process which is critical when assessing both safety implications, informing maintenance programs and when necessary, making recommendations on rehabilitation interventions.
