This course covers the basic principles of statics including forces generated by applied and gravitational loads; how to establish the resultant of these forces, break them down into components and calculate the axial resisting forces maintaining equilibrium.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

Module 1 - Introduction/Vectors

  • Define the units of measurement used in Statics, and explain the terminology used to describe loading systems and their supports.
  • Set up and solve problems involving the use of trigonometrical functions.
  • Solve problems involving the manipulation of vector quantities.

Module 2 - Moments and Couples

  • Calculate the turning effect (moment) about an axis caused by a single force or combination of forces.
  • Identify and measure couples.

Module 3 - Resultants

  • Determine the resultant of concurrent and parallel forces, or systems where the forces are neither concurrent nor parallel.
  • Substitute a single resultant force for a system of distributed loading.
  • Replace a force by another force and a couple.

Module 4 - Equilibrium

  • Draw free body diagrams of systems in equilibrium.
  • Use the equations of equilibrium to determine reacting forces in concurrent and parallel force systems.
  • Calculate the resisting moment in fixed-ended cantilevered systems.

Module 5 - Trusses

  • Recognize and define two force members in force systems.
  • Analyze trusses by evaluation of the joints.
  • Analyze trusses by isolating sections.

Module 6 - Frames and Machines

  • Use the method of members to analyze frames.
  • Solve problems related to frames and machines.

Module 7 - Three-dimensional Systems

  • Reduce forces to components along three axes.
  • Apply the equations of equilibrium to three-dimensional systems and use these to solve for forces.
