In this introductory sound course students explore the fundamentals of sound theory, equipment and building story ideas to produce a quality audio product primarily for the Web. Students will examine the basics of acoustics and environment, audio equipment and their effective use and best practices. Students will discover why technical choices justly influence great storytelling to realize a quality recording. The goals of the course are the discovery of a new hobby or business, an added skill for a web entrepreneur or an introduction to a career in the industry.

  4. You will require access to the Adobe Creative Cloud to complete this course - registered BCIT students will receive further information closer to the course start date with subscription details. This course will be delivered synchronously ONLINE, requiring your attendance and participation in scheduled online lectures on the days and times noted on the course web page. This is not a self-paced course. Ideally students should attend all online sessions during the posted meeting times and online class attendance is mandatory Apr 9, 23, May 7, 21, Jun 4, 18. A good basic computer operation knowledge is highly recommended and access to a computer that can run complex, data heavy graphics software. It is important to have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. If seats remain, registration is permitted without approval up to April 15, 2024, by calling 604-434-1610.

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Describe how the environment affects sound waves and analyze the effects.
  • Explain how a microphone and mixer functions and demonstrate techniques.
  • Compare various sound processing equipment and evaluate functionality.
  • Discuss theoretical examples of simple post production and define techniques.
  • Explain how digital sound is recorded and use of digital editing software.
  • Determine television and location sound show requirements.
  • Analyze effective storytelling skills through technical competence.
  • Write and produce a Podcast production for the web.
