Course Overview
The focus of the course will be on designing and detailing freestanding and built-in furniture, cabinetry and trim, with an emphasis on residential spaces. Students will examine the various methods, techniques and materials involved in the construction; various types of cabinet and component systems will be discussed, with an emphasis on identifying the appropriate substrate and finish specifications to achieve desired results in terms of aesthetics, performance and budget. Students will analyze and specify various functional and decorative hardware options. This course will introduce students to kitchen and bathroom cabinet nomenclature as well as AWMAC certification standards and specification methods. Students will learn how to design and specify various ready-made and custom trim options, and produce drawings that can be read and interpreted effectively by both cabinet suppliers and finish carpenters. Course material is enhanced with hands-on experience in millworking through JOIN 4350.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Specify millwork construction materials and their appropriate applications.
- Apply an understanding of millwork and cabinetry nomenclature to residential millwork design.
- Produce detailed drawings and specifications for various types of residential interior millwork and custom furnishings.
- Assess whether a specification or a detail is applicable and/or required.
- Specify appropriate and sustainable materials, finishes and hardware for various types of residential interior millwork.
- Determine millwork configuration requirements for installation of kitchen and bath appliances, plumbing and lighting fixtures.
- Identify the suitability of custom vs. ready-made cabinetry and mouldings for a particular project.
- Develop an awareness of metric vs imperial scale and identify instances in which metric may be used by cabinet manufacturers and building trades.
- Design and detail with an understanding of wall panelling, trim components and ceiling details.
- Familiarization of AWMAC certification standards.
- Create a complete set of drawings including detailed drawings of all millwork and appropriate specifications for appliances, hardware, plumbing and lighting fixtures.
