Course details
This nano-module introduces the management of areas designated as parks and protected areas. We will define what a protected area is, the types and roles of protected areas and some of the processes for establishing protected areas. We will introduce the benefits that flow from having protected areas. We will also introduce the dual mandate of parks and the concept of ecological integrity. We will review Canada's system of protected areas and our commitments under the UN Convention on Biodiversity (the Aichi targets). Using examples we will look at how protected areas are managed in British Columbia.
Prerequisite(s)
- Grade 10 Math or equivalent and Basic English Proficiency and Competency with Computer.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Define what a protected area is as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
- Outline why we have protected areas and some of their benefits to society including ecosystem services and human health.
- Outline Canada's commitments, the Aichi targets, under the UN Convention on Biodiversity.
- Contrast protected areas at the municipal, regional, provincial and federal levels.
- Describe Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs).
- Outline how protected areas are created at the federal and provincial levels.
- Describe relevant legislation and policies that guide management.
- Describe the dual mandate of parks.
- Define ecological integrity and outline how we can manage for it.
- Describe current topics of protected area management in British Columbia.
