Course details

This course presents an overview of the full scope of the development of an energy management project. The course provides a practical opportunity to bring together all the components of an energy management project learned in the Sustainable Energy Manager program by preparing an energy management project plan for a real business or building. Various project delivery methods, financing models and perspectives on gaining executive approval are explored. This course may be eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant. Students register themselves into the course, then apply for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant to cover payment, if eligible.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Outline the components of project development.
  • Differentiate between levels of energy audit in the project development process.
  • Compare, evaluate, and select various project delivery methods including traditional methods and performance contracts.
  • Contrast the various financing alternatives for energy management projects.
  • Outline the tension between capital budgets and operating expenses with respect to energy management projects.
  • Differentiate between utility cost savings and avoided costs.
  • Outline timeline and process for business case development in project development process.
  • Differentiate between the role of project manager and construction manager.
  • Prepare a communications plan for an energy management project.
  • Create a measurement and verification plan for an energy management project.
  • Contrast the four main approaches to measurement and verification in the International Performance Measurement & Verification Protocol.
  • Assess baseline adjustments in evaluating project performance.
  • Deliver an executive summary presentation for an energy management project that can be used to help demonstrate your abilities when marketing yourself for your future career.
