Course details

This course is designed to provide an interdisciplinary group of learners with the knowledge and skills to develop and manage their professional practice while considering sustainability imperatives. Principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), industrial ecology, circular economy, and urban world issues are covered in a manner that reveals constraints but also opportunities and strategies for balancing environmental, social and economic perspectives. In addition, the changing roles and approaches in governance systems and the role of stakeholders in decision making will be discussed. The course delivery mode is an experiential learning in classroom and field settings.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Interpret sustainable development imperatives and create a framework to address associated challenges in their professional practice, such as: ecological carrying capacity; creating production and consumption systems; accounting for costs and benefits of economic decisions; ecological footprint; protecting, conserving and restoring natural, social and cultural resources; and monitoring and evaluating.
  • Exemplify designing governance systems aimed at encouraging sustainable ecological change, supported by inclusive decision making involving diverse stakeholders.
  • Assess the impacts of current industrial processes and practices on human and natural systems as well as the associated benefits of industrial systems designed like ecosystems.
  • Understand ISO LCA requirements and guidelines.
  • Identify major databases, tools and resources used in LCA practice.
  • Operate Open IO-Canada and Impact Estimator for Buildings (IE4B) LCA tools.
  • Develop excel-based LCA model.
  • Use LCA in environmental management and reporting.
  • Discuss urban sprawl and planning strategies for sustainable, smart communities within a context of globalization and social equity, focusing on improving efficiencies to promote reduced demand for services, energy and materials.
  • Engage in decision-making processes within governmental and non-governmental agencies while promoting cross-cultural collaboration.
  • Propose strategies that foster the application of principles of sustainability in their area of expertise and/or practice.
  • Promote global sustainability through international indicator assessment.
  • Effectively utilize leadership and communication skills in promoting sustainability.
