Course details

Introduces methods for quality improvements and cost reduction of products and services through waste elimination and continuous improvement of related processes. Typical lean techniques, such as pull-scheduling and production levelling, are examined along with the analysis of the roles of customers, employees, and management. Applications of lean principles in manufacturing are covered in detail, along with examples in services and health care.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the initial developments in lean methods starting with Henry Ford and emergence of the Toyota Production System.
  • Discuss differences between craft production, mass production and lean production.
  • List and discuss seven types of waste in a traditional manufacturing system.
  • Describe just-in-time, kanban, jidoka, and other key elements of the Toyota Production System.
  • Describe and apply lean problem solving techniques.
  • Distinguish between the process and operation components of manufacturing and service activities.
  • Identify lean systems components that are also common to Statistical Process Control, Design for Manufacture and Assembly, Reliability and Concurrent Engineering, and MRP.
  • Apply lean system principles to a product or service value chain.
  • Develop a lean system implementation plan for an example of a manufacturing/service enterprise.
