Course Overview
Develops simple, yet powerful methods for understanding and evaluating a wide variety of scientific and pseudo scientific material. Introduces some of the great thinkers and theories of the past, both winners and losers. Reflects on what makes scientific reasoning so effective, and uses these reflections to evaluate some contemporary criticisms of the place of science in society.
Prerequisite(s)
- BCIT ENGL 1177, or 6 credits BCIT Communication at 1100-level or above, or 3 credits of a university/college first-year social science or humanities course.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the role of the philosophy of science in critically evaluating the methods, goals, and process of science. [12]
- Demonstrate familiarity with prominent influences in the philosophy of science. [12]
- Identify and understand the kinds of arguments used by philosophers of science. [12]
- Demonstrate facility with the methods and terminology used by thinkers in the field. [7,12]
- Critically analyze philosophical arguments and relevant texts at an appropriate level. [7, 12]
- Source material relevant to forming, defending, or critiquing positions on issues in the philosophy of science. [12]
- Evaluate sources in terms of their authority, and the cogency and consistency of their argumentation. [12]
- Develop critical writing skills. [7]
