Course details

This course is designed for experienced Level 2 qualified ultrasonic technicians looking to expand their knowledge and gain a qualification in phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT). This is a full classroom course with 120 hours of training condensed into an intensive two-week schedule. At the end of the course candidates will write exams for certification to BS EN ISO 9712 from one of two certification bodies (candidates' choice): CSWIP - With certification from TWI PCN - With certification from BINDT (this is a FULL PCN - Omniscan Course) Note: Candidates must meet the experience requirements for the certifying body prior to certification​.

Prerequisite(s)

  • CSWIP candidates should be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712 in Ultrasonic Testing (CGSB/CSWIP/PCN). CSWIP certification is available for candidates holding ASNT UT Welds. It will be considered on an individual basis and evidence of training and experience presented to the training center on application. Additionally, holders of ASNT UT Welds qualification will be required to sit the CSWIP UT Welds Level 2 General Paper. Candidates with previous training in Phased Array UT may be eligible for a reduction of the total training hours required for CSWIP certification. Please contact Customer Services for further information. PCN candidates must be qualified to a minimum of BS EN ISO 9712 (CGSB/CSWIP/PCN) Level 2 Ultrasonic Testing. The minimum duration for experience prior to or following success in the qualification examination is: 6 months for CSWIP 4 months for PCN

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • ​​Explain the theoretical background of phased array applications.
  • Correctly select probe/wedge to examine welded butt joint
  • Calibrate and set up the phased array ultrasonic equipment
  • Carrying out tests, post test procedures,
  • Collecting and storing test data
  • Locate and evaluate flaws in the weld body, HAZ, and parent metal lamination
  • Analyze scan data for location and size of defects in typical welded butt joints.
  • Accurately report weld condition and differentiate defects from geometric features.
  • Compile a written instruction.​
